Everest® Safe-Pak is Recyclable
Everest® Safe-Pak is recyclable as it was tested at North Carolina State University under the Fiber Box Association’s “Voluntary Standard for Repulping & Recycling Corrugated Fiberboard”. International Paper-Coated Paperboard was advised that large retailers were accepting this test for mixed materials of paperboard and other substrates. International Paper was confident that Everest® Safe-Pak could meet the separable component of the test. However, it was unlikely that it would meet further process tests like STFI and burst, which were developed for corrugated packaging. This paperboard and its component fiber are not intended to be used in corrugated packaging. The testing by North Carolina State indicates that Everest® Safe-Pak is indeed separable into its component parts of paperboard, polymer, and Valeron film, but did not pass the corrugated packaging tests (STFI and burst).
Everest® Safe-Pak is recyclable:
- All calipers of Everest® Safe-Pak average 75% paperboard by weight with the balance being primarily LDPE and Valeron
film
- 53% of Americans have access to collection of paperboard for
recycling based on the AF&PA’s 2005 Recycling Study
Non-paperboard components of Everest® Safe-Pak are individually recyclable as well.
Everest® Safe-Pak’s primary material is solid bleached sulfate (SBS) paperboard, which is made from a renewable resource – trees. All paperboard used in the production of Everest® Safe-Pak is certified to meet the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI); ensuring that the fiber utilized is harvested and replanted in a sustainable manner.
Other positive impacts surrounding Everest® Safe-Pak and the facilities which manufacture it:
- Packages from Everest® Safe-Pak are up to 44% lighter than a
similar plastic clamshell
- Packages from Everest® Safe-Pak use up to 76% less
plastics/polymer material
- 60%-70% of energy used to produce the base paperboard in
Everest® Safe-Pak comes from biomass/renewable energy
sources
- International Paper facilities producing the base paperboard
have reduced their nonrenewable energy sources by 20%
since 2003
